Sydney Opera House Design Concept

In 2007 the sydney opera house was listed as a unesco world heritage site cementing its place as a preeminent icon of modernist architecture. He looked upon nature for guidance when designing as nature over time combined both.

Sydney opera house located in the bay of sydney harbour is a performing arts centre which since it opened in 1973 has come to be seen as a masterpiece of modern architecture and a symbol of australia.

It marked a moment of re engagement between the architect and the building that had defined his careerbut which he had never seen. The story behind this magnificent structure began in 1956 when the new south wales.

Jorn utzon had just entered an anonymous competition for an opera house to be built in australia on a point of land jutting into sydney harbor. Arguably considered the eighth wonder of the world the opera house has a long history behind its design. Utzon himself defined the buildings concept as a combination of slices of oranges.

The design techniques developed by utzon and arup for the sydney opera house have been further developed and are now used for architecture such as works of gehry and blobitecture as well as most reinforced concrete structures. Utzons design principles and the sydney opera houses decade of renewal in 1999 after extensive negotiations jorn utzon agreed to develop a set of guidelines for future changes to the sydney opera house. The sydney opera house is one of the most famous buildings in the world and its history is inextricably linked with our own.

Our founder ove arup was involved in the original design which began in the 1950s and we continue to play a pivotal role in the buildings long term development and preservation plan. The design of the sydney opera house was inspired by nature its forms functions and colours. Utzon was influenced in his designs by bird wings the shape and form of clouds shells walnuts and palm trees.

Interestingly the sydney opera house drawings are public records held in the archives of the new south wales government. The sydney opera house has become australias national symbol instantly recognisable around the world for its uniquely shaped roof structure jutting out over the harbour. It was designed by danish architect jorn utzon following an international architectural competition in 1957.

The project was supposed to be completed in three years at a cost of 3 million australian dollars. After winning the international competition to build the sydney opera house jorn utzons controversial project broke ground in 1959 at bennelong point.
